John Burroughs of Enfield

My name is Victor Burroughs and I am a direct descendant of John Burroughs of Enfield. I was given a copy of my cousin Theodora Blanch Burroughs 1971 family history “The Burroughs Family of Enfield” by my Uncle Franklin Burroughs when I was 10 years old. I remember being surprised that my family had been in America since the mid 1600’s, as I was just then learning of the Pilgrims and the Puritans in my school classes. This triggered my lifelong hobby and interest in the Burroughs family genealogy.

I have the fortunate advantage of being the care taker of all the information collected by my late Great-Grandfather Genellus Granville Burroughs and my Uncle Franklin Burroughs. Both of them spent a good deal of time investigating and recording the history of the family. In the mid-1940’s Theodora Blanch Burroughs traveled to Otisco NY to meet with my Great-Grandfather G G Burroughs. It was during this meeting that he shared with her the family Bible of his Great grandfather Porter Burroughs as well as a Burroughs genealogy that he had paid a researcher for in 1899.  I still have a copy of that researchers report and it is pretty accurate except for the relationships he included to the historically famous members of the Burroughs family! My uncle Franklin continued to correspond with Theodora until her passing in 1971. When Uncle Frank passed in 1999, his daughter Anne brought me all of those letters from Theodora, including her corrections to the book as published. Her book is amazing for its overall accuracy given she didn’t have our current advantage of the internet for searching books and records for tidbits on the family.

The pages listed here is my attempt to organize my thoughts on different problems I have been working on with the very early Burroughs family. As of late I have concentrated on John of Enfield origin and marriage. I have seen many genealogists on-line and in books state as facts relationships I know to be false.  I hope to be able to develop a strong enough theory on his true origins to be able to approach Burroughs family members living in England. I believe with the current availability of the DNA test, it will be possible to finally prove his ancestry and where in England, John of Enfield called home.

This site represents my attempt to move the information I have collected on my Burroughs ancestors to the internet in a controlled setting. Please feel free to contact me at vlbaron@yahoo.com if you have information pertaining to our family. Thanks!
